The WEGO membrane oxygenator is a single-use device designed for extracorporeal blood-gas exchange during cardiopulmonary bypass. It integrates membrane oxygenation, temperature control, blood reservoir, filtration and blood recovery into a single system.
It uses a microporous hollow fibre membrane for blood-gas exchange: blood and gas come into indirect contact on either side of the fibre wall, completing oxygenation and carbon dioxide removal by diffusion and avoiding serum protein denaturation. The heat exchanger uses a PET capillary design with blood flowing outside and temperature-controlled water inside.
